The Paediatric Allergy and Immunology research group is the research arm for the Allergy and Immunology services based at both The Children’s Hospital at Westmead and the Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick. Both sites are supported by their respective department heads as well as the expert clinicians, scientists, specialist nurses and administration staff. Through collaborations and partnerships with local, national, and international institutions and research groups, our research plays a crucial role in understanding paediatric allergy and immunology.
Objectives
With allergic disorders having increased dramatically over the past 20 years, our research strives to support families and communities with improved strategies to prevent allergy development and manage food allergies with novel therapies. Our research focus areas are the following:
- Food allergies, prevention, diagnostics and immunotherapies
- Immunodeficiency and early diagnostic screening
- Immune dysregulation
- Personalized/targeted therapies
Impact
- The BEAT study completed at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead showed that early introduction of egg reduces egg allergy development. Further mechanistic studies revealed immune mechanisms underlying this tolerance induction.
- We are currently leading multiple studies and trials to potentially implement new methods for prevention and management for nut allergies, including peanuts, cashew, pistachio and sesame.
