The Paediatric Neurology Research Group is an affiliated group with the University of NSW School of Clinical Medicine working within the Department of Neurology based at the Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick. We are a diverse team of clinicians and researchers with different areas of expertise relating to rare and complex diseases in childhood, including epilepsy, neuromuscular, neurodegenerative and neurodevelopmental.
Objectives
We have a dynamic research portfolio relating to rare neurological disorders and epilepsy in children. These diverse objectives are supported by our comprehensive, multidisciplinary teams of epileptologists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuropsychologists, epilepsy nurse, allied health including physiotherapists, social worker, and occupational therapists. We particularly have a focus on researching novel technology and treatments and supporting our research with resources to support not only health professionals but also carers of children with neurological disorders.
Impact
- We are involved in clinical trials of novel therapeutics, which included the translation of three new precision therapies for spinal muscular atrophy.
- We have been responsible in building resources for patients and families through the BrainAid project relating to advanced therapeutics.
- We develop psychoeducational tools to improve information provision, understanding and aid decision making for healthcare providers and consumers of new and emerging health technologies.
