The Microbiome, Gastroenterology And Pancreas (MiGAP) Research Group is a clinical-research team based at the Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick. We are one of the world’s leading gastroenterology research group in Cystic Fibrosis (CF) and paediatric pancreatitis, with the group associated with over $10 million in research funding. We are the only paediatric founding member of the Australian-New Zealand Alliance for Pancreas Research and only Australian-Asia Pacific member of INSPPIRE (International Study Group of Pediatric Pancreatitis: In search for a cure).
Objectives
Our research focuses on chronic gastrointestinal diseases and chronic diseases that involve the gut, childhood nutrition and childhood pancreatic diseases. With two broad research programs:
- Gastrointestinal inflammation and microbiome: relating to cystic fibrosis in children and adults and a variety of childhood diseases that affect the gastrointestinal tract.
- Pancreatic disease program: including international studies in acute, recurrent acute and chronic pancreatitis.
Impact
- We are one of the leading gastrointestinal and nutrition research groups in CF, transforming and informing CF nutrition guidelines internationally and nationally.
- Our research has influenced international and national guidelines in the management of gastrointestinal, pancreatic and hepatic manifestations of CF.
- Our CF research has demonstrated evidence for a diet-gut-lung axis for the first time, and rationale for dietary changes and intervention in people with CF.
- Our research has informed and been cited by international guidelines in the management of pancreatitis in children.
