The Respiratory Research Group is the research arm of the respiratory clinical service based at the Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick. We conduct research on cystic fibrosis, asthma, primary ciliary dyskinesia and rare lung diseases. We collaborate with various Hospital departments and the University of NSW School of Paediatrics and Child Health.

Objectives

Our research aims are to support patients and families and create impact in clinical care and policy. We aim to better understand the complex illnesses our patients have, the impact of these illnesses on them and their families and to find novel ways to treat and manage children with respiratory diseases.

Impact

  • We have the only personalised medicine lab for Cystic Fibrosis in the Southern Hemisphere, the MiCF programme.
  • Our ImPACT Asthma program generated a 60% reduction in asthma representations at the Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick. It has now been adopted as routine care.
  • We develop asthma resource packs that are used in other states to reduce preventable asthma hospital presentations nationally.
  • Our clinical trials have helped children with Cystic Fibrosis get access to life-changing new therapies.
